Altinkum
The gorgeous resort town of Altinkum in Turkey truly lives up to its name, literally meaning, golden sand (altin meaning gold and kum meaning sand). Its sand-swept coasts glitter in the warm sun all year round, tempering the climate and the locals with a relaxed atmosphere.
The long stretch of beach hug each end of the resort, beginning at the harbour end, and create a kilometer of perfect landscape by the sea.
It is no small wonder then that even the Turkish locals find the sunny Aegean coasts at Altinkum an attractive escape from the busy city life. Turkish citizens from the larger cities like Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara had begun to make the region their summer vacation spot, building summer homes here.
Over a glass of Turkey's famous apple tea by the sun, guests can charter canoes for a ride onto the sea, as well as exchange friendly banter with the locals also on holiday. The evenings are reserved for lively entertainment as well as an opportunity to sample the regional fare around the two main squares of the town center.
The resort town is also the popular take-off point for day trips to ancient villages of the Greek period. For example, hailing from the 7th Century BC and restored during the region of Alexander the Great, there is the nearby town of Didim whose magnificent temple to the Greek god Apollo and its famed statue of the head of Medusa from Greek mythology is breathtaking. Later, the temple was converted by early Christians into a church.
There are also the ruins of the city of Ephsus, the nearby beautiful Bafa Lake with its magnificent mountain vistas that invite guests.
