Saklikent

The stunning locale of Sakliken near Toros to the east of the Esencay Valley in Turkey is a must-see. It is among the canyons that attract the most attention of tourists to the Turkish countryside with hundreds of guest from within and outside the country visiting the canyon yearly.

It is interesting to note that the local villagers living in this region discovered Saklikent only 20 years ago. No wonder the word Saklikent is known in the Turkish language as the hidden city. But recently there have been documented archeological finds of ancient inhabited caves most likely used for shelter thousand of years ago, from Roman times.

Located in the mountain tops above the Fethiye region, the fast flowing water from the headlands have created the narrow gorges of the Saklikent Gorge.

The longest and deepest gorge in Turkey is a natural wonder to behold. Since it is extremely narrow and steep and narrow with high walls, the sun’s rays are unable to reach the fresh mountain spring waters below, making it wonderful for a icy cool dip in the hot summer months. The adventurous are invited to visit the canyon and enter its limestone walls carved out by the waters than ran through it centuries ago. Small waterfalls also dot the area for a refreshing shower.

After a long day of exploring as well as water rafting and trekking in the gorge area, one can avail of the accommodation in the many motels and even tree-houses available. Picknickers find this site a dream, as guests enjoy meals at the campsite or at the restaurants that serve fresh trout from the waters and other regional delicacies, while admiring the red and black pines, as well as the proud cedar trees.
