Kas

The relaxed fishing town of Kas in the Antalya region of Turkey is a known unspoilt locale to discover the natural wonders of the area as well as its hidden treasures.

As it looks out from its hilltop view, the town of Kas meets the charming vista of the clear aquamarine seas below.

Its altitude makes it a wonderful location with a Mediterranean climate of warm summer days. Coupled with the fertile soils, the location blossoms with orange and lemon trees, and plentiful honey and almonds close to the pine, while the lowland areas produce a variety of fruits and vegetables, many are grown all year round.

Accessible from both Antalya and Dalaman airports the village Kaş is an unassuming pleasant town with narrow streets scented with jasmine flowers.

The atmosphere is homey and friendly with guest houses and family owned cafes that offer home-style local cooking, with small bars that invite guests to unwind after a day exploring the undersea delights, as one of the most famous locations in the country for scuba diving.
Kas’ history stretches back to the ancient Lycians, as evidence by the ruins of one of the richest Lycian necropolis. Later on the Greeks named the town Antiphéllos or Antíphilos, since it was the harbor in front of the city of Phellos, which was known in the Roman period as an exporter of sponges and timberwood.

Its history is everywhere—an ancient Roman ampitheatre still houses the annual arts and musical concerts in Kaş. Ancient cities of Komba (in the village of Gömbe), Nisa, Kandyba, Phellos, Istlada, Apollonia, Isinda and Kyaenai can be visited and invite a stroll through its ruins.

Often locals will recommend a trip to Kekova island in the neighbouring district of Demre with its undersea treasures—surprising variety of wrecks of ancient ships and cities sunk in its waters. The clear waters allow visitors to see the intricate details of city buildings that have sunk into its deptjhs such as staircases or columns. In fact, in 2006 Kaş was added to the specially protected Kekova marine area in order to preserve its rich biodiversity.
