Marmaris

One of the original holiday resort towns in Turkey is Marmaris, with its combination of the cosmopolitan lifestyle with nature and cultural heritage.

Today Marmaris enjoys its reputation as one of the most beautiful settings of any Turkish resort, with an air of ancient history with ruins like Physkos, Saranda, Amos and Loryma nearby among local and international guests who return year after year.

Known as a small seaport town from one of
the old Aegean kingdoms, Mamaris was later conquered by Alexander the Great’s empire as well as by the Roman rule of pax romana.

The town of Mamaris lies on a large bay encircled by pine covered hills, with a large crescent shaped sandy beach that stretches out with kilometers of sand and surf for both the avid water sports enthusiast as well as the laid back beach bum who may decide to just lounge by the palm-lined shore.

Visitors will be able to appreciate the massive structure of the Mamaris Castle right on the sea port area. During the Ottoman Empire, Marmaris Castle and Harbor were used as a supply point for the navy. The castle in fact was said to have been built during Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's journey to conquer the land of Rhodes. Today the castle is a modern day museum.

The covered bazaar and public marketplace at Marmaris is a bargain shopper’s paradise, only for those wanting an authentic Turkish shopping experience with carpets, brasswares, souvenirs, leather goods and clothes. The outdoor markets are available on Mondays and Thursdays and offer a wider, more traditional selection of goods than those found in the seafront shops.
