Turunc
The town of Turunc is a gem that lies along the winding roads of the Turkish mountains, as the long road opens up into the gorgeous waters of the crescent shaped bay and its sandy beach. The hills that lie above the sandy sea front reminds one of a mother eagle cuddling a baby eaglet.
This local visitors’ secret is a paradise hidden in the hills, under the guise of a former quaint and simple fishing village due to its proximity to the seas and its bounty.
Turunc has an ancient past that has seen through the Hellenic period of the Greeks and Romans to Byzantine times, with the ancestors of today’s villagers once said to be from the Toros Mountains.
The mountain folk, used to a life of agriculture, were suddenly more attuned to the sea’s offerings for livelihood and survival come a great legendary contagion that affected the area. As such, a large percentage of the population moved down the mountains to live by the shore.
The Turunc today is a known holiday centre with a range of facilities supporting any kind of traveller’s budget—from pensions to luxury hotels. The main shopping street is actually closer inland than to the beach, running parallel to the seafront.
For those wanting a truly unique shopping experience, there is a wonderful local market place that is open every Monday to locals and visitors alike. Local produce, artisan’s crafts, and unique trinkets are available.
The sun lover will love Turunc, as any part of the beach all year round is perfect for sunbathing, swimming or perhaps for the more adventurous, watersports such as scuba diving. There are also calm cruises available on cooperative boats to see from the waters the reason why pristine Turunc has received the European Blue Flag Award.
